The head of the organising committee and RMIT Vietnam Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor, Professor Julia Gaimster articulated the idea behind the theme of VFCD 2024: “Creative and sustainable RE:GENERATION is the process of renewing, restoring, or revitalising a cultural heritage (tangible or intangible), a community, or our environment. The importance of creative regeneration lies in its potential to transform and create green, vibrant, sustainable products, communities, or spaces that are resilient in the face of change.

Initiated by RMIT University Vietnam, the Vietnam Festival of Creativity & Design 2020 (November 7–22, 2020) was an open-access series of physical and online events—including heritage tours, workshops, talks, and exhibitions—celebrating local creative talent across Hanoi, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City.
Building on the successful 2019 media and design festival, it expanded its reach across three major Vietnamese cities to drive collaboration and socio-economic growth. Each city featured its own theme: Hanoi (Creativity & Culture), Hue (Creativity & Heritage), and Ho Chi Minh City (Creativity & Innovation).
VFCD 2020 aimed to support Vietnam’s national strategy for cultural industry development, establish a global creative brand, and foster a “belt of creativity” to expand the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in Vietnam.
